THE biggest weekend of the Barrhead calendar is just days away and reparations are already under way to transform the Cowan Park.

Boosted by news of a delay to school build works and boasting the biggest programme of events for years, organisers are claiming the 2014 gala will
be the biggest and best yet. There have even been suggestions that the numbers attending could get close to five figures.

Dozens of stalls will be set up, tents pitched and rides given their final checks before the park opens to the public on Saturday afternoon — and the Barrhead News is set to have its own tombola stall.

Gala chairman Ryan McNaughton said: “It’s been a long time coming and there has been a lot of work and effort put into making this gala this biggest and best one yet.

“It is looking like our parade is going to be massive, and I can’t wait to see it entering the park.

“We would love to see Barrhead residents turn out in their thousands to support the event, there is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy — and we are hoping that the weather stays warm and dry for us.”

Barrhead gala staples such as the balloon race for Kibera, sweet and cake stalls as well as live music will also be joined by some new attractions, including a massive football tournament hosted by Arthurlie FC.

The town’s popular Cafe 158 will be running a tea tent - and the Barrhead News will also be running a stall.

Rides will entertain the masses while the main stage plays host to a gala talent tournament, bonny babies and the gala king and queen—the position
of gala king is making a return for the celebration of the 40th anniversary.

New and exciting local acts and bands are set to join headliners Rewind on the main stage, while pipe bands and the historic Barrhead Burgh Band.

Ryan said: “Invite your family and friends, and get down to the Cowan Park to make the biggest event of the year the biggest success of the year.”

The parade will leave from Carlibar Road and follow a path up Cross Arthurlie Street, Main Street, and Aurs Road before turning into the Cowan Park.

ONE of the hottest up-and-coming boybands in Scotland have been booked to headline Barrhead Gala Day.

Teen stars Rewind are set to take to the main stage at the June 7 event to perform after taking a break from the extensive tour of Scottish and English schools.

They were announced alongside two other local acts as gala organisers say they are doing their best to support local talent.

Gala chairman Ryan McNaughton said:“We are absolutely delighted to announce that Rewind will be performing at the gala day and we are hoping that they will draw a big crowd to the biggest event on Barrhead’s calendar.

“If you have ever heard them or seen them you will know that they are the real deal and a top notch act that we are really lucky you be getting along.

“I couldn’t be happier to have them coming along and they will also be coming to our after party at the United Services Club.”

The after party will be an all ticket event with tickets available at the Gala for £5, and is an over 21 event only.

Ryan added:“We will also have entertainment and we are hoping to get the boys performing too.”

The band, who are Kieran, 16, Ryan 21, James, 20, and Lewis, 20, from Glasgow, and Jack, 19, from Edinburgh, were put together in January last year when their management decided it was time a boy band from Scotland stormed the charts.

Since then, the boys have performed across Scotland, including at the Tartan Festival at the SECC with pop stars Little Mix and Stooshe.

The band recently courted with controversy after one of their members had explicit private photos posted on social networking sites.

Ryan added:“They are a great bunch of guys and I have worked with them in the past.”

Two more acts were also announced this week, with Mark Angels – Young Scot Award Unsigned Act 2013 Award Winner – performing and Murdo Mitchell, a young singer from Kilbarchan.

That's a shame, in theory the Barrhead Gala Day should be a great event for the town, but I hear people have lost interest in recent years. They'd better make sure the beer tent is big enough.
