Junk mail Print E-mail

Getting Too Much "Junk" Mail? You can stop it - read on... The ’problem’ of direct mail is huge.

We receive nearly 4 billion pieces of direct mail every year and about a third of this is thrown straight in the bin.

It’s going to get worse as restrictions on the Post Office, on the amount of marketing mail, are going to be lifted.

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has teamed up with the environmental charity Planet Ark to launch a campaign to promote the use of the Mailing Preference Service to stop direct mail reaching your doormat.

But one mans junk is also another mans treasure - you may be happy to receive direct mail but want to turn it a shade greener.

These letters and leaflets can be recycled with your newspapers through kerbside collections or in the paper banks.

That way, recyclers can turn your unwanted mail into new paper products, if we all did that, it would make a big difference – 78,000 tonne difference per CouncilBorough.

If you want to stop receiving unwanted direct mail from companies that you have not dealt with before, sign up to the Mailing Preference Service (MPS), you can register your details free of charge online at www.mpsonline.org.uk or call 0845 703 4599 (local call rate).

By signing up to the MPS, you can take your name off 95% of the UK’s direct mailing lists.

The DMA also have an email, fax and telephone preference service which is worth looking into.

PLEASE NOTE:A) You can expect to receive mailings from companies with whom you have already dealt with in the past.

Although the MPS removes your name from up to 95% of Direct Mail lists, you may also receive mailings from small, local companies.

If you wish these mailings to be stopped, you should notify these companies directly.

B) It may take up to four months before you notice a significant change in the Direct Mail you receive.

C) The MPS cannot stop unaddressed material from being delivered BUT YOU CAN NOW OPT OUT OF RECEIVING JUNK MAIL DELIVERED BY THE ROYAL MAIL

The Royal Mail delivers huge volumes of unaddressed direct mailings through our doors. If you do not want to receive this you can opt out by  Emailing optout@royalmail.coThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .uk
