East Renfrewshire Council services hit by effort to halt coronavirus

REPAIRS to roads and council homes are being scaled back as the coronavirus takes its toll on local services.

East Renfrewshire Council has said only emergency repairs will be carried out on local authority houses for the foreseeable future.

Repairs that aren’t classed as urgent will be recorded and carried out when the situation improves, it added.

“This is necessary to ensure personal contact is minimised to reduce the risk of infection,” said a council statement.

“During this critical period, we’ll maintain a service for those who are homeless or threatened with homelessness and provide information, advice and assistance to anyone who finds themselves in this situation.”

People can find out more about homeless services by calling 0141 577 3719 or 0800 052 0180 for inquiries made outside office hours.

Anyone who has received a letter from the Chief Medical Officer advising them to self-isolate in line with shielding guidance, which includes not leaving your home, can get support with food shopping and the collection of medicines by contacting the council on 0141 577 3093 or by emailing

The council’s roads team is also operating on a reduced basis, as quarries needed to carry out resurfacing works and pothole repairs have temporarily closed.

“There will be no further resurfacing works carried out for the time being and the roads team will move to emergency repairs only,” said the statement.

Some pest control services have also been suspended by the council, with all routine or non-emergency contract visits stopped.

Baits and traps currently in place will be left to “ensure a level of pest control protection.”

The council is also warning people to be aware of coronavirus scams, including anyone selling virus testing kits, vaccines or miracle cures, overpriced or fake goods to protect yourself, shopping or medication collection services and home cleaning services.

The Scottish Welfare Fund is still being provided during the coronavirus pandemic, with community care and crisis grants available. Details of how to apply can be found on the council’s website.

And anyone who wants to volunteer to support vulnerable residents in East Renfrewshire can get advice by calling a community helpline on 0141 876 9555.

Coronavirus: East Renfrewshire Council given extra cash to help families unable to access food

EAST Renfrewshire Council is being handed hundreds of thousands of pounds to help families unable to access food as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

A total of £348,000 will be made available to East Renfrewshire as part of a £30m investment from the Scottish Government Food Fund.

The extra cash will support those most in need, including families with children who are eligible for free school meals, older people, those with long-term health conditions and pregnant women.

Council chiefs will have flexibility to use the money in ways that best meet emerging local needs and circumstances, working with community groups and businesses to support home delivery, provide financial help and meet dietary requirements.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said: “This pandemic is impacting on all our lives but, for some, it is more than a disruption, it is severely restricting their ability to access food for themselves and their families.

“It is vital that we work together to ensure the most vulnerable people in our communities receive the support they need.

“Local authorities are uniquely placed to respond swiftly, in partnership with community groups and organisations, to help those struggling.

“We know that free school meals are vital for families and an important way of ensuring their children receive the nutritious food they need. That is why it is so important that support continues while schools remain closed.

“This fund will help ensure the most vulnerable people in our society during this outbreak receive support.”

Health and social care

Last updated: 29/04/2020

Much of the country is calling for the public to adhere to the new measures that have been put in place to protect our NHS and frontline staff - that includes our Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) which is responsible for delivering health and social care services in East Renfrewshire.

Our priorities have been to protect our most vulnerable residents during these unprecedented circumstances. A huge amount of work is being undertaken, from business support staff ensuring as many staff as possible are set up to work from home and managing rotas for front line staff, training GPs to deliver online consultations, prioritising hospital discharges to free up beds in hospitals and get our residents back home and comfortable. Our district nurses and care at home staff are continuing to provide vital services to residents at home and our social work teams are working with our most vulnerable families and young people.

The HSCP will continue to work closely with colleagues in the Council, NHS and Scottish Government throughout this pandemic.

Bins, recycling and neighbourhood services Expand/Collapse

Last updated: 28/04/2020
Bins

Bins update for May: recycling collections will be reintroduced for green and brown bins.

The Council is able to reinstate these collections because staffing levels have increased since the initial lockdown was announced, however they are not yet at a level to allow the resuming of normal service.

Here is how the updated weekly collection cycle will work for May:

W/C Mon 4 May - green (plastic, cans and bottles) and brown (garden and food) bin collections on your normal collection day.

W/C Mon 11 May - grey (non-recyclable) bin collection on your normal collection day.

W/C Mon 18 May - grey (non-recyclable) bin collection on your normal collection day.

W/C Mon 25 May - green (plastic, cans and bottles) and brown (garden and food) bin collections on your normal collection day.

The teams will be out collecting bins on the May bank holidays (8 and 25 May).

Blue bin collections will not be reinstated at this stage.

Any further updates will be added to this webpage and Council social media accounts.

Please share with those who may not be online.

Additional information:

If you've somewhere you can safely store your blue bin waste, please do so and it'll be collected when full service is resumed.

Grey bin waste will be sent to a special recovery centre and converted to green energy - wherever possible it won't be sent to landfill.

Please don't leave additional waste in bags beside your grey bin - it isn't safe for our staff to touch and it won't be collected.

If you do have excess garden waste, we suggest finding an area in the garden suitable to allow it to compost naturally.

No further requests for additional grey bins will be accepted.

There will be no further special uplift bookings taken. Any pre-booked uplifts will be collected.

We will still aim to collect your bin on the normal collection day.

The following services will continue to operate as normal:

Trade waste collections

Litter bin emptying and manual street sweeping

Recycling centres

Our recycling centres at Greenhags and Barrhead are now closed, following the latest announcement by the government on Monday 23 March.
What to do with your waste if you have Coronavirus symptoms

If you've symptoms of Coronavirus or live with someone who does, you must store your personal waste such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths securely within disposable plastic bags.

When appropriate, these bags should be removed and placed into another bag and securely tied or sealed and kept separate from other waste.

This must be stored for at least 72 hours inside your property before being put in your non-recyclable waste bin. Other household waste can be disposed of as normal.
