2015 - East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) changed the Community Councils (CC) constitution etc.

Stamperland & Netherlee folded, Clarkston folded.

Giffnock and Eaglesham eventually managed to reform.

Newton Mearns was split into two.

We have reported extensively on the reason that ERC undertook this exercise.

2019 - ERC are calling CC elections towards the end of this year.

We are interested in how the CC's have fared under what was described at the time of instigation as 'draconian' constitutions.

How much support have they received from ERC.?

Have Councillors been more supportive.?

What have CC's they managed to achieve.?

We will cover these and other topics.

In addition we will provide a platform for all Community Councils to answer those questions and get their message out to the public of East Renfrewshire.

It would appear that this is a very good time to do so, ERC apparently intend to disband the CC's around June and hold elections in October 2019.

Community councils are made up of local people who give of their time and have a genuine interest in, the well-being of their community and the people who live there.

Community Councils are a special type of community group that has a legal right to be consulted on important local issues, such as planning and licensing. They are a great way for local people to get things done in their area and make sure that the voices of local people count. They are a direct link between local people and the Council, NHS, police, fire and other public bodies. They meet to discuss matters of interest to their particular local area, with a remit to make known to the local authority and to other agencies, the views of local people on matters affecting them.

Role of a community council member
Understanding the role you will play as a community council member.

Community councils are in place to represent the views of their communities and it is community councils which provide that link between the community and a range of public agencies.

As a community council member you can help ensure that the community council is acting in the best interests of the community by speaking to local people - neighbours, parents at schools, even businesses - and finding out if there are any issues that they think need to be addressed locally. You can find more information on this in: Listening and responding to your community.

Together with your fellow community council members you can use this information to decide on the key activities that the community council will get involved in.

So there we have it, a very important role.

How have the community councils performed over the past years?
