Is Eastwood Park to become a concrete jungle ?

A lot has been made about saving Greenspaces within East Renfrewshire.

But who will save Eastwood Park's Greenspaces ??

Extracts from Eastwood Park Vision & Masterplan: Future Opportunities Appraisal - Peter Brett Associates

'The site has many positive aspects including mature woodland and paths.

It is however very lightly used a ‘traditional’ Park and is more commonly associated with the Council HQ, the High School and the Leisure Centre / Theatre.'

'An important part of this work will be to establish how the park can build on some of its relative successes and to ensure that the future uses are compatible with or at least complement the existing ones.'

'In particular, there is a current planning application for a new 180 place Family Centre which will sit adjacent to the community allotments and this will create a link between the OLM Primary and St. Ninian’s High School.'

'In terms of St Ninian’s School there is reference to the requirement for modular classrooms from 2021 onwards and the need to provide a new denominational primary school & early years nursery (which is now subject of a ‘live’ planning application), a new non-denominational primary school and additional support unit and a new denominational secondary school.'

'This provides an opportunity to consider how these inter-relate and to consider whether there is scope to combine and share facilities within enhanced buildings to afford mutual advantage.'

'Demolition of the Council Headquarters is also cited and references to the Leisure Centre requirements are all underlying issues that will inform the masterplan and the desire for the Council to create an improved identity for Eastwood Park and perhaps re-brand the area,

for example as ‘Eastwood Park; Learning & Innovation Campus’.'

'St Ninian’s High school is currently operating at pupil capacity and this will also be reviewed as part of the study and all other associated buildings that currently operate within the site, including Eastwood House and the social work outbuildings.'

'Options to improve the access and egress from the Park will be considered.'

'A masterplan for the Eastwood Park site would allow ERC to consider a range of available options for the site measured against future plans and priorities for the local area.'

'This will help them to determine the best possible mix of land uses and service provision across the site.'

'The site has many positive aspects including mature woodland and paths.'

'It is however very lightly used a ‘traditional’ Park and is more commonly associated with the Council HQ, the High School and the Leisure Centre / Theatre.'

'Eastwood House – a listed building also sits within the Park and is an under-utilised asset.'

'The available budget will allow for an assessment of existing land use, the physical constraints, barriers to sustainable travel and the reliance on a single vehicular access.'

'It will also consider appropriate standard for parking – not associated with individual buildings but generated to provide for users at day and night and across the whole park area – not centrally dominating the setting.'

Again,is Eastwood Park to become a concrete jungle ?

'With regard to the wider master plan a vision is being developed to create a new park that not only has a different mix of land uses but also creates an outdoor space that can be used productively as a combined resource for people at work within the park and for those that visit and use it for recreational purposes. Buildings should link to each other, facilities should be joined and footpaths and cycle connections should be improved. Outdoor event space should be encouraged. Eastwood Park should become a place that has a purpose and draws people to use its facilities. This will be the subject of a separate report in due course building upon the leisure centre options appraisal.'
